Burning Images

Burning Images

Purpose of the Technique:

**Burning images** is a simple submodality technique used to destroy mental images. If you have an inner image that disturbs you, bothers you, or keeps you from falling asleep, this technique can help you easily eliminate it.
Before applying the technique, it's useful to conduct an *ecology check* to ensure it’s appropriate to proceed.

Procedure

Step 1:

Ecology Check:
Let the image you want to destroy appear in your mind’s eye. While looking at it internally, ask yourself the following questions:
- Is this image trying to draw my attention to something I should do or avoid in the future?
- Does this image contain an important message for me?
If yes: What exactly should I do or avoid in the future? What is this image trying to tell me? What needs to change or be done so I can let go of this image?

Step 2:

Burn the Image:
Imagine holding a lit match to the image, watching it start to smolder, darken, curl, and finally turn to a pile of ash. Or imagine a cozy fireplace and toss the image into the flames, enjoying how it crumbles and vanishes in the heat.
Another reference could be imagining a film reel burning through at the spot where the projector light stops and melts the frame.
You can use whatever visual makes the image burn and disappear into ashes.

Step 3:

Test:
Check how you feel about the image now. If necessary, repeat Step 2 a few more times.
