Goal Formulation: SMART

SMART – Formulating a Goal Properly

The SMART method is a proven approach for setting goals. Although many people know it by name, it is often not applied correctly. The importance of having concrete and measurable goals is not stressed frequently enough. SMART helps you define a goal precisely. Here is what the acronym stands for:

  • Specific (S): A goal should be specific—that is, formulated precisely and clearly, ideally in a positive statement. Instead of “I don’t want to smoke anymore,” use a positive statement like “I want to live healthily.” The clearer your vision of the goal, the more specific it is.
  • Measurable (M): You should be able to measure progress in some way, so that you can tangibly perceive your advancement.
  • Attractive (A): The goal’s scope and nature should be designed in a way that makes it appealing to you. It should truly motivate you to achieve it.
  • Realistic (R): All dreams and goals can be realized if you firmly believe in them. Nevertheless, there are physical or personal limits. A realistic goal is one that can actually be achieved under your current life circumstances.
  • Time-Bound (T): A goal should have a fixed deadline—meaning a specific date or point in time by which the goal is to be accomplished.

Exercise: How Do I Set SMART Goals?

  1. Step 1: Choose a place where you feel comfortable. Take a pen and a sheet of paper and think about your life. Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do but have never really managed to accomplish? Do you have goals and dreams you haven’t begun to pursue yet?
  2. Step 2: Once you’ve identified something, formulate a well-structured goal that is specific, measurable, attractive, realistic, and time-bound.
  3. Step 3: Write this well-structured goal on the sheet of paper and place it somewhere you will see it often.
