Team-Building Process

The Format
A format to accomplish a task as a team, or for newly formed teams taking on a task.

Standard Steps:

  • Team Task + First Idea
  • Commonalities
  • Values
  • Shared Value
  • Review Ideas
  • Team Decision

Detailed Description:

1. Team Task + First Ideas
Each team member contributes suggestions for tackling the task.
Rule: Everyone speaks on the topic, everyone is heard, and no one is judged.
Each person develops one or two ideas on how to address the task. All ideas and proposals are heard in turn and noted objectively.

2. Commonalities
Extract the commonalities among the proposals.
The group discusses what is common in all of them, or which principles or possibilities overlap. Each person checks whether these identified commonalities make sense to them.

3. Values
Extract the underlying values, norms, motivations, and the “why” behind each proposal.
Each person thinks: “Why did I propose this path?”
Which values are important to me? All values are presented one by one and noted objectively.

4. Shared Value
Find the overarching shared value.
Caution: not just the smallest common denominator!
The group discusses which value is fundamental and from which all others derive. Each verifies whether the discovered value resonates with them.

5. Review Ideas
Review and adjust previously mentioned suggestions and ideas individually.
Each person notes how their own values have shifted based on the discussed values and presents that to the group.

6. Team Decision
The team decides how they will proceed and divides the tasks.
The group discusses a common solution, considering time constraints and the congruence of each person’s input.

Summary
Format suitable for:
Tackling a task as a team, including newly-formed teams taking on a task.
Format in contrast to:

  • Team Kaleidoscope: Suitable for getting to know each other and forging stronger bonds by exchanging resources via the logical levels.
  • Leonardo da Vinci Process: More suited for resolving conflicts within a team.

Format Pitfalls:

  • Team members contribute unevenly.
  • Team members fail to follow the rules.

Format Notes:
Ensuring adherence to the rules is crucial: each team member must contribute ideas and opinions, be heard, and not be interrupted or judged.
