2 – Constructing Reality

In an old Indian tale, four blind men are asked to touch an elephant and describe it. The first feels the elephant’s trunk and says, “An elephant is long and thin.” The second feels its belly and declares, “No, it is huge and floats above us.” “Nonsense,” says the third, who has grasped a leg. “It is firmly rooted like a mighty tree.” The fourth touches a tusk and protests, “Why are you lying to me? The elephant is smooth, curved, and tapers to a point at one end.”

Each is convinced they know exactly what an elephant is, yet each has only a partial reality. Still, they all generalize their fragment and proclaim it absolute truth. Do we do any better in everyday life? Don’t we too quickly generalize our experiences and take them for truth? We fail to grasp that our entire notion of reality depends on what we perceive, the slice of experience we focus on, and the limits imposed on our senses. Those who perceive events differently are often called crazy or unrealistic—but from no objective vantage point is there always a single right or wrong. Many respond to this story, “Well, they’re blind. I can see! I know what an elephant looks like. I perceive reality.”

That is a fallacy—countless details escape you, as you will see in this chapter. But why discuss perception in a book on dreams and motivation, so early? So you can learn your limits—and then shatter them! How did your reality form? Will it always remain the same? Is reality identical for everyone? Do those who disagree simply have blocks over their eyes? Are they too dumb to see the obvious truth? What you hold as your reality—and struggle to maintain daily—determines what you deem possible. Your dream can only come true if you treat it as real! Only what exists in your mind and imagination can become reality. Most people have collected a subjective slice of experiences in the past and generalized them to everything: because something was impossible before, it will be impossible in the future; because it failed ten times, it will never work; if it is impossible for others, it must be impossible for you too. But who says? Who proved it?


The past is not the same as the future!

If past and future were identical, today we wouldn’t fly through the air, dive to 10,000 m depths, or call anyone on the other side of the globe in seconds. The future is what you make of it! What is real for you is determined solely by you. You choose which slice of reality to observe and the meaning you assign. Let’s take a brief, exciting journey through scientific insights on perception.

Our perception forms the critical foundation of our lives. Without it we wouldn’t interact with our environment—we wouldn’t even know it exists. Our sense organs—eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin—constantly take in thousands of stimuli and transform them into sensations we can experience.


At a Cocktail Party

Imagine you’re at a reception or cocktail party. Suddenly your eyes catch a new guest wearing an oddly mismatched tie. You’re about to comment to your neighbor when a burst of laughter from a small group nearby overtakes even the loud stereo. You tune your ears to hear, then the buffet is set up right before you. The scent of roasting meat drifts to your nose, and your mouth waters at the thought of its taste. You almost drop your wine glass—yet catch it just in time.

In that brief scene you absorbed a flood of stimuli and probably assume—like most—that you processed them all at once. You’re hardly aware of most. Only when a sense fails do you notice its importance: a flashlight in a dark forest, or missing the scent of food when you have a cold, or the danger of undetected gas in the kitchen. Without hearing, traffic would be perilous; without touch you’d never feel pain or comfort from another’s touch. All seems natural—but what underlies it?

Each sense organ filters a specific range of stimuli. Receptors—like the light‑sensitive cells in your retina—convert stimuli into signals that excite sensory cells. Those signals travel along nerves to the brain’s sensory centers. Scientists once thought these centers worked like unbiased meters, responding identically to identical inputs. New research shows even these initial brain centers filter out what’s deemed unimportant. Attention plays a central role.


We perceive most what we pay attention to.

Desimone’s Experiment

Robert Desimone of the U.S. National Institutes of Health demonstrated this vividly. He trained monkeys to fixate on a screen showing a red and a green dot. The monkeys were instructed to focus on green, and Desimone recorded neural impulses for green and for red. When attention shifted to green, red‑sensitive neurons went silent—although red was still in view—proving attention can modulate sensory detectors.


Focus Illustrated by Car Shopping

In everyday life you’ve seen this: you buy a blue sedan of a certain brand. Weeks ago you thought such cars rare—but now you see one at every corner. They’ve always been there, but your attention brought them into awareness. By deciding on the car, you directed your focus until your conscious and unconscious mind repeatedly registered it.

If you doubt this, try an experiment now: look around the room and notice every red object—for a few seconds. Do it now!

Sure you caught them all? Now list every blue object. Surprised? You’ll realize several blue items were in your field of view yet unnoticed.

Another example: a seamstress and a hairdresser attend a ball. The seamstress will notice fabrics and stitching flaws; the hairdresser will judge haircuts. What occupies you shapes your perceptual patterns. If you look for what fails, you’ll see failures everywhere; if you focus on what works, you’ll find positives abound.



Focus on the positive and you will recognize the positive.

Four simple facts about perception:

1. We do not perceive reality as it is.

We don’t see atoms or vibrations, but colors, sounds, smells, etc.—only what our senses provide after transformation into a form we understand.

2. Only a small portion of reality is perceptible to us.

Many physical processes elude our senses—beyond seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and touching there exist vibrations and more. Early scientists deemed such phenomena magical because only effects were observed, not causes. Over time they discovered X‑rays, radioactivity, infrared, ultrasound, and more, expanding our sensory reach with technology.


Discovery of X‑Rays

In 1895 Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen accidentally discovered X‑rays while experimenting with cathode rays. He then developed devices to harness them—transformative for medicine, earning him the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

Similarly, without instruments radioactivity would remain hidden. Thanks to Curie’s work on polonium and radium, it became well known. Human eyes detect electromagnetic waves only from about 380 nm (violet) to 680 nm (red), yet other wavelengths affect us. We use infrared for therapeutic heat, for example.

Crotaline snakes hunt via thermal radiation. If you blindfold them and disable their olfactory cells, they still locate prey by heat. Humans have thermoreceptors too, but far fewer—about 3 per cm² of skin versus the snake’s 150,000.

Even infrasound below 20 Hz travels vast distances—pigeons detect it, using it to navigate by distant thunderstorms or earthquakes. Humans can’t hear ultrasound above 20 kHz, but dogs can—hence dog whistles. Bats echolocate with ultrasound: if we made their calls audible, the night would be filled with noise. Their single cries match a jackhammer’s volume.

Moles navigate darkness with pressure‑wave echoes: as they tunnel, waves bounce back from obstacles. Electric eels emit weak currents to locate prey, then stun it. Other fish and some insects perceive electric fields. Some animals even sense Earth’s magnetic field—eels use an internal compass, termites align nests magnetically.

Scientists daily uncover more “senses” hidden from us. Many purported psychic or healing powers may arise from enhanced perception of subtle energies beyond common senses.

3. Of the processes we can sense, only those above certain thresholds reach awareness.

We perceive only stimuli crossing a threshold; our bodies could not act on every weak signal. We register many sensations unconsciously, but only meaningful ones reach awareness. Soldiers wounded in battle often felt pain only enough to leave the battlefield—pain perception is modulated by context, culture, and necessity.


Pain Perception

Ronald Melzack describes an Indian ceremony in The Puzzle of Pain where steel hooks pierce a devotee’s back, who is then paraded on a cart. The man shows no pain, appearing transcendent; the wounds heal rapidly with minimal care.


Findings of E. H. Weber

In the mid‑19th century, E. H. Weber showed we detect two points on the skin as separate only if they exceed a threshold distance, varying by location. He also measured how much brightness, sound frequency, or sugar concentration must differ for us to notice—our “just noticeable differences.”

These four facts show we cannot perceive an objective reality detached from us. We know only our subjective experience—our “reality.” That differs significantly from the real world: the sun doesn’t move east to west, and time does not pass faster during pleasant activities.



We create our own reality!

Reality exists only outside our experience and can never be fully grasped. “Reality” is what we make of sensory data. It is our construction—our internal model of the outside world. The world is far too complex to handle directly, so we build simplified maps in our minds. These maps guide our behavior, determine our experiences, and shape which choices we see. In the adjacent illustration, the world‑model is depicted as a map that marks coastlines and mountains to resemble the real territory.

Picasso and Reality

Once a man asked Picasso why he didn’t paint things as they are. Picasso asked what he meant. The man showed a photograph of his wife: “See—this is my wife, this is how she really looks.” Picasso replied, “She seems so small and flat, don’t you think?”

We often forget our mental map isn’t reality. That’s fine if everyone shared the same map—but they don’t. We live in partially different realities.


Three Types of Filters

Before information reaches our brain as perception, it passes through three filters that transform it so we can handle it. Without them, we’d be overwhelmed by constant stimuli and memories. These filters are useful—but also distortive.


Neurological Filters

The first filter is our nervous system—our body’s “hardware.” We’ve seen thresholds and missed entire signal types (e.g., ultrasound). Our nervous system thus creates major gaps between actual events and our perception.


Social Filters

The second filter comprises social factors—language, agreed‑upon norms, and shared fictions of our cultural groups. These differ by language and culture, causing divergent perceptions. Ever read two countries’ newspapers on a soccer match and seen each claim their team dominated? Or experienced a match differently from a neighbor rooting for the other side?

We tend to treat language as reality rather than a description. Words are symbols, not the thing itself. Don’t eat the menu instead of the meal. Yet we often forget this, believing that having a word means something must exist. Language thus shapes reality and thought—consider “weed”: a negative association born purely of language.


Individual Filters

The third filter is personal: each person’s unique history creates individual preferences, beliefs, habits, and behaviors. No two people— not even identical twins—share identical experiences. Key events and learned lessons imprint us, producing filters that shape our behavior in specific situations.



Our past experiences influence our current behavior.

Imagine you and your best friend in line at a cinema. You chat while a cacophony of voices drifts in. You barely notice until someone behind you calls your name. Instantly you tune in. Your friend likely hears nothing—your past has made your name a powerful trigger of attention. Similarly, your past visual experiences shape how you see new images. Study one of the two images below, then view the third image—your interpretation depends on which you saw first.

Your answer depends on which figure you viewed first: if you saw the young woman, you’ll see her again; if the old woman, you’ll see the old woman.


Experiment with Water

For touch, try this: pour cold, hot, and lukewarm water into three glasses. Place your left hand in the hot water and your right in the cold, then both in the lukewarm. Your left hand will feel it cold, your right hand warm—same water, different prior stimuli.



Everyone’s mental map differs in parts from others’.

What models serve us best? Those who struggle often see the world as limited. They feel no choice remains—because their mental map is limiting. Others see opportunities everywhere. They adapt flexibly and find solutions.


Two Sneaker Salesmen in Africa

A company sent two sneaker salesmen to neighboring African regions and told them to report at midnight GMT whether to ramp up or halt production. The first called: “Stop production—no one needs sneakers in this heat.” The second called excitedly: “Build warehouses and produce more—everyone here wants sneakers!”

Why the contrast? They used different mental maps. The first focused on obstacles, the second on opportunities.


Deletion, Generalization, Distortion

Cybernetics teaches that systems with more options survive best. A model offering you choices is superior. People with restricted maps may feel undue fear or pain—but within their map they make the best decisions they can. Those decisions may seem irrational in another map.



People always make the best choices available to them.

To understand behavior, you must enter someone’s model and see their constraints. Most are trapped in their own filters and judge others harshly, declaring “That’s impossible!” Ask yourself how often you’ve dismissed something as impossible that later succeeded. Lasting success requires smashing these limits so you can grow without bounds.

Let’s analyze how filters alter reality. Information we receive undergoes generalization, deletion, and distortion. Generalization spares us relearning the same lesson in new contexts—once burned by fire, we avoid flames. But we also overgeneralize, e.g. a child who eats spoiled pudding and gets sick may conclude “All pudding makes me sick,” lacking nuance.

Deletion lets us omit unwanted or harmful information—useful but potentially deceptive, as we exclude warnings or truths. Distortion transforms information—ever misheard a comment? Distortion can turn negative into positive or vice versa, e.g. mistaking praise for irony.


Stories told by others undergo double filtering

If your experience comes from someone else’s account, it’s not direct truth but a filtered perception. Then it is recast through language, itself subject to deletion, distortion, and generalization. The listener receives a twice‑filtered copy of an already filtered reality.

The true map in another’s mind and what arrives in yours differ because language imposes further deletion, distortion, and generalization. You receive a distorted, deleted, generalized copy of an already distorted, deleted, generalized copy of reality.
