How you can turn inner saboteurs into allies

Why do we sabotage ourselves even though we know exactly what we want? Behind procrastination, doubt, and inner resistance, there are often voices that haven't been heard. This article takes you into the "Shadow Conference" – a powerful NLP format that doesn't fight inner conflicts, but integrates them. Through Claudia's story, you'll see how inner conflict turns into teamwork – and how new clarity, courage, and power to act can come from that.

There are moments in life when we get in our own way. We have a goal in mind – but still, we don't do what's needed. We sabotage ourselves, hesitate, doubt, procrastinate. From the outside, it looks irrational. But inside, there's often a quiet battle: between duty and freedom, safety and adventure, courage and fear.

The Shadow Conference is an advanced NLP format that gives these hidden conflicts a stage. Instead of fighting inner resistance, we invite it in, give it a voice and a place. And then – in dialogue with powerful resources – totally new ways for integration open up. Instead of suppression: invitation. Instead of fighting: integration.

The example: Claudia and her dream of her own studio

Claudia is 46, mom of two teenagers, and works part-time as a graphic designer. But for years, she's been dreaming of opening her own creative studio – a place for art, workshops, and meeting people. The idea just won't let her go. But as soon as she takes a step in that direction, inner doubts show up.

"I've got a thousand ideas – and just as many reasons why it won't work", she says with a pained smile.

Step 1: Call the conference

I ask Claudia to imagine that we're calling a conference – with those inner voices that are holding her back from her plan. We don't make them the enemy – we listen to them. Claudia closes her eyes. I guide her with a gentle hypnotalk: "Invite all those voices that pop up when you think about your dream. Imagine them coming into the room one by one – each with their own energy, voice, and posture. And now notice them, just as they really are."

She opens her eyes – and after a short pause, she names three figures:

The Critic: strict, old, dressed in black – "What if you fail?"
The Worrier: a nervous man with a briefcase – "How are you going to pay for this?"
The Perfectionist: elegant, cool, demanding – "It has to be perfect, or you can forget it!"

I write all three down on cards and place them as floor markers in the room.

Step 2: Every shadow gets to speak

Claudia steps into each position one after the other, takes on the posture and voice, and lets the figures speak:

Critic: "You're too old. You have responsibilities. Stop dreaming."
Worrier: "You have no safety net. It's too risky."
Perfectionist: "If it's not flawless, no one will take you seriously."

I can feel how heavy Claudia is getting. It's tough – but she sticks with it. I acknowledge the voices and then ask: "What do they really want? What's their concern?" Suddenly, the tone changes. The Critic wants to preserve respect and dignity. The Worrier is worried about safety and stability. The Perfectionist longs for recognition and pride.

Step 3: Bring in the resources

Now I ask Claudia to find three resource figures – personalities who could help her get in touch with these inner voices. She chooses:

  • Frida Kahlo: for artistic courage despite pain
  • Oprah Winfrey: for feminine strength, depth, and success
  • Her daughter Emma: "Because at 15, she's already freer than I ever was"

I place the three resource figures as floor markers in the room, too.

Step 4: The dialogue begins

Now each shadow figure gets to face a resource figure – and enter into an inner dialogue. I guide the process with prompts, like: "Frida, what do you say to the critic?" "Oprah, how do you answer the worrier?" "Emma, what would you say to the perfectionist?" Touching moments happen.

Frida to the critic: "I painted despite my scars—because I had to let out what was inside me. Would you really stop Claudia, even though she's blooming?"
Oprah to the worrier: "You want security? She'll find it, but not the old way."
Emma to the perfectionist: "You're beautiful, even with mistakes. I want a mom who's alive—not one who does everything perfectly."

Step 5: Integration

Now Claudia stands in the middle of the room—all the figures symbolically around her. I invite her to imagine how all these forces are working inside her now, not against each other, but as a team: "You can keep your security—and still dream. You can make mistakes—and still shine. You can have doubts—and still move forward." She takes a deep breath. Her shoulders relax. "I don't feel torn anymore—I'm whole now."

Step 6: Future Pace

In a quick future pace, Claudia imagines taking her first steps: checking out a studio space, writing down a concept. Her inner voices are still there—but in a new way. "The critic still looks strict—but she's nodding at me", she says with a smile.

Why this format is so transformative

The shadow conference makes visible what works unconsciously— and allows a new way to deal with it. It's based on a core NLP principle: Behind every behavior, there's a positive intention. Instead of pushing shadows away, we bring them on stage. And we give them what they often never had: attention, space, and appreciation.

"You don't get enlightened, by imagining light-figures, but by becoming aware of the darkness." – C. G. Jung
