Episode 4: The Storm Before the Pitch

In our short stories, we take you on a creative journey and show you how NLP can be applied in practice. In the previous cases, Julius Frei has already solved some exciting cases, and today the story continues...

The sky over HafenCity was leaden as Julius Frei stepped out of the taxi. The wind blew in gusts across the Elbe, swept through the urban canyons, and made the glass facade of "Nordlicht Creative" look like a taut membrane. Modern. Confident. Digital first. Fifty employees. Two floors. Project walls full of mood boards.

And today: the most important day since the company was founded. Eight million euros annual budget. Three-year term. A high-profile mobility group: HanseMobility AG. Winning meant growth. Losing meant ten to fifteen fewer jobs in-house.

The pitch didn't take place here. It took place at the client's headquarters—a few kilometers away, right by the harbor. Two agencies. Two slots. One decision-making panel. The storm wasn't outside. It was inside.

On the way to the client

The open-plan office was buzzing with tense activity. Laptops were being packed, presentation clickers checked, printouts reviewed. And in the middle: Tobias Rehm. In his mid-fifties. Founder of Nordlicht. Gray at the temples. An iPad in his hand.

"Slide 17 is too weak." "The competition will take a tougher approach there." "We need more impact." His voice was calm—but his breathing shallow. His steps just a touch too quick.

Julius watched. (Technique: Calibration—breathing, movement rhythm, group dynamics)

What he saw was not a team in the flow. It was a team in defense mode.

The Lobby

The headquarters of HanseMobility AG was an imposing glass building overlooking the Elbe. Reception, security badges, understated art on the walls. Just as Nordlicht arrived, the door to the large conference room opened. The Berlin agency came out. Young. Confident. Casually dressed. One patted the other on the shoulder. "That went well." A quiet high-five.

A designer from Nordlicht whispered, "They were definitely brilliant." Tobias' jaw tensed. (Technique: Submodalities – competitive image is magnified in the mind)

The waiting area

Nordlicht was led into a separate room. Thirty minutes to go until their slot.

Julius calmly asked a question: "How big is the image of the competition in your head right now?" "Huge," someone said. "And what about you?" Silence. "Smaller."

The energy began to shift. Tobias stood up. "That's exactly why we need to be even sharper." Hustle and bustle.

"Stop," Julius said calmly. Silence. "You're in survival mode right now. Not in creative mode."

The Hallway – The Real Storm

Julius asked Tobias to step outside. Glass hallway. View of the water. Seagulls screeched in the distance.

"What absolutely must not happen here?" "That I mess it up again." "Again?" "Two years ago, we lost a major client. We had to let ten people go." His hand wandered to his solar plexus.

"Where do you feel it?" "Here. Pressure." "If that feeling were an object, what would it be?" "A dark ball." "How big?" "About the size of a fist." "Take it out. Hold it in front of you." Tobias moved his hands slightly. "Make it smaller." Take a breath. "Even smaller." "Like a pebble." "Put it two meters away." A longer breath.

"What's different now?" "It's clearer." (Technique: Changing submodalities)

"Good. Now go back to 2009." "Our first big budget." "Where do you feel it?" "In my chest." "What color?" "Orange. Warm." "Make it bigger. Brighter. Breathe it in." His posture straightened.

"Say aloud: I lead." "I lead." "Again." "I lead." "As you feel this, reach with your right hand to your left forearm. Right where you can touch it discreetly later." Tobias did so. "Press lightly. Take a deep breath. Save it." He held the touch. "Now let go. Think of something mundane." A brief frown. "And now reach out again." Tobias did so. His shoulders immediately relaxed.

"What's different now?" "It's back." (Technique: Setting and testing self-anchors)

"You don't lead out of fear," Julius said calmly. "You lead out of strength." "I led out of fear," Tobias said quietly. "And my team took it on." "And now?" A deep breath. "Now I lead."

The Pitch

"Nordlicht Creative, please." The conference room was large. Ten board members. Two external consultants. A large screen. Just before Tobias stepped forward, he discreetly touched his left forearm. Take a breath. His shoulders were steady. His gaze was calm.

Then he began. No rushing. No justifications. Clear strategy. Clear structure. Presence. The client listened. Really listened. At the end, the CEO said, "You seem to embody it. Not just present it." Two weeks later, the decision was made. Nordlicht won the account.

Aftermath

When Julius was back at "Nordlicht Creative," Tobias stepped up beside him during the debrief. "What was the difference?"

Julius smiled slightly. "You didn't win the pitch out there." He tapped his chest with two fingers. "The storm wasn't in the market. It was inside you."
