Chunking

NLP Lexicon

In NLP, chunking describes the ability to divide information into meaningful units, known as 'chunks'. Our brain does not think in terms of endless individual pieces of data, but rather in digestible portions. A simple example: a telephone number such as 017621548903 is difficult to remember – but if we divide it into smaller groups, such as 0176 – 215 – 489 – 03, it is much easier to remember. This is exactly what chunking is in action: we reduce cognitive load by bundling information.

The brain uses this ability constantly – when learning, planning and communicating. In NLP, it is used specifically to make thought processes more conscious and communication more effective.

This refers to:

Chunking up

(abstracting upwards)

Chunking down

(going into specifics)

Lateral Chunking

(finding alternative examples on the same level)

A coach asks, 'What exactly do you mean by "more freedom in life"?' – thereby chunking down. He could also ask, 'What would be the overarching meaning behind this desire?' – that is chunking up. Or: 'Can you think of other situations in which you feel free?' – this is lateral chunking, i.e. switching to an equivalent level with different content.

This flexibility in thinking is extremely helpful – not only in coaching, but also in conflicts, learning processes or goal clarification. Those who get lost in details can regain their bearings through higher-level chunking ('What is this about on a higher level?'). Conversely, an abstract goal ('I want success') can only really take hold when you chunk it down: 'How exactly would you know that you are successful?'

Chunking is like an internal zoom lens:

You can zoom out and see the big picture, or zoom in and capture fine details – depending on what is helpful in the situation. In conversations, true understanding often only arises when the right chunk level is used. Too many details can be overwhelming or boring. Statements that are too abstract seem unclear or disconnected. Through conscious chunking, we find just the right balance.

What makes chunking so fascinating is its simplicity and depth. It helps to create clarity, organise complexity and enable new perspectives – in thinking, feeling and acting. Those who have learned to think at different chunk levels gain flexibility, structure and connection at the same time.
