Ecology Check

NLP Lexicon

In NLP, the term 'ecology' does not refer to the environment in the traditional sense, but rather to the interaction between a person and their entire internal and external system. The ecology check asks: Is the planned change really right for me – and for my environment?

The aim is to find out whether the new behaviour, goal or result not only makes sense rationally, but is also supported at a deeper level: emotionally, unconsciously, systematically – both internally and externally.

Many people want to change something – more self-confidence, more money, a new relationship or peak athletic performance. But sometimes they don't achieve their goal or experience unexpected setbacks. Why? Because part of them is internally holding them back. Or because external tensions arise that they have underestimated. The ecology check brings precisely such contradictions to light – not as obstacles, but as important signals.

A classic example: someone wants to win the Ironman. A big, ambitious goal – with clear motivation. But the ecology check shows that this goal requires intensive training over many months. That means time, discipline and sacrifice. And suddenly it becomes clear: if I train every morning at 5 a.m. and fall into bed exhausted in the evening, what does that mean for my family? Will my children even see me anymore? Will my relationship suffer? Will I have to cut back on work – and if so, can I afford to? And what will this lifestyle do to my body – can it cope with it in the long term?

The ecology check is like an internal and external system scan. It asks: What will change in my life when I achieve this goal? What could be lost as a result – in terms of connection, energy, balance? Who in my environment will be affected, directly or indirectly? And am I prepared to live with these consequences – or do I need to make adjustments, have a conversation, find a balance?

Internally, there may be unconscious loyalties ('I must not be more successful than my father'), while externally there may be concrete consequences ('My team will bear the burden if I take three months off'). Only when both levels are considered does a coherent overall picture emerge. Change is most successful when it is not only desired by one part of the system, but supported by the entire system – internally and externally.

Ecology does not mean doubt, but care. It is not mistrust of one's own vision, but respect for the consequences. The ecology check is like a conversation with one's own soul – and with the quiet voices around us. Can I really do this – for myself, for us, for the greater good?

When the answer from within and without is a clear 'yes', something special emerges: congruence, connection and lasting change with substance and depth.
