Understanding Colours – Color Language Between Perception and Meaning
A psychological and design-based look at the emotional power of colors
Colors affect us—often before we consciously perceive them. They have a rapid, intuitive, and profound effect. Few stimuli influence our emotional state as strongly as a particular color. Colors can calm, motivate, distance, or connect us. Color psychology specifically studies this effect: red can increase the pulse, blue can create trust, and green can bring us balance. These associations are not random, but culturally influenced and neurobiologically anchored. The emotional power of colors makes them a central tool in coaching, therapy, and design.
Colors also play a role in personality psychology. People show color preferences that allow conclusions to be drawn about character traits. Those who love blue often seek calm and reliability; those who are drawn to orange tend to be open, creative, and curious. Thus, colors reflect not only our moods, but also our personality structure. In coaching processes based on the NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) model, these connections are used to support change processes, reveal resources, and emotionally charge inner images.
Colors act as emotional markers—they anchor states, make the unspoken tangible, and reinforce desired effects. They help bring the unconscious into consciousness without forcing it. As C.G. Jung put it: “Colors are the mother tongue of the unconscious.” This is precisely where the journey begins: with the conscious perception of a language that speaks within each of us—colorful, deep, and clear.
Colors are not only a reflection of inner processes, but also a catalyst for change. Their effect unfolds in depth—not loudly, but insistently; not dogmatically, but dialogically. They invite reflection, encounter with the self, and shaping of the future. In the interplay of light, emotion, and memory, they form an invisible vocabulary that is equally important in coaching and in art. Colors speak an archaic, pre-conscious language – one that is understood without being translated. Colors are not merely visual stimuli; they are emotional signals, psychological resonance chambers, and symbolic amplifiers. They affect us on a cellular level as well as on a spiritual level, consciously and unconsciously at the same time. The better we understand them, the more effectively we can use them – whether in design, communication, or change management. Ultimately, colors are not external phenomena – they are internal experiences with color value.

Healing effects of colors
Colors can not only design and communicate, but also heal. Color therapy assumes that each color has a specific vibration that influences the body, mind, and soul. This effect is based on an interplay of biological perception, psychological resonance, and cultural influences. For example, blue can calm and lower blood pressure, while yellow has a mood-lifting effect. Colors are also used in NLP to specifically influence emotional states—for example, by changing the color of inner images or when working with resources. If an anxiety-inducing image is bathed in soft green, for example, relaxation can set in immediately. Colors are like frequencies that can change entire moods at the right moment. Their targeted use activates self-healing powers, promotes emotional balance, and creates inner space for development.
