Collapsing Anchors

Resolving Unpleasant Situations

The article introduces the NLP format "anchor merging," which helps to resolve stressful emotional reactions. By simultaneously activating opposing states—such as fear and calm—a new inner balance is created. A coaching example is used to show how emotional blockages can be resolved. The method strengthens self-regulation and promotes confident behavior in challenging situations.

We've all been there: in certain situations, we repeatedly react with nervousness, anger, or helplessness—even though we know we'd rather feel differently. But old patterns take over. The NLP format "anchor merging" offers a simple yet profound method for neutralizing such emotional reaction patterns through resourceful states. The key: you bring two opposing states into play at the same time – the nervous system integrates them and automatically finds a new, powerful state of balance.

Application in a Case Study

Tom is 29 and works in sales. Whenever he has to give a presentation in a meeting, he feels an inner block. His hands get sweaty and his throat goes dry. "I know I can do it—but I lose control every time."

In coaching, Tom is asked to recall a specific scene in which his voice faltered. Even as he recounts the story, the unpleasant feeling begins to surface—nervousness, pressure in his chest, a queasy feeling in his stomach. The coach slightly intensifies the feeling and anchors it in Tom by gently pressing his left palm.

This is followed by a short separator: "How many compartments does your refrigerator actually have?" Tom laughs briefly, interrupting the state. The test shows that when the coach presses his left palm again, the feeling immediately returns. The anchor is set.

Building Resources – and Anchoring Them

Now the coach asks: "What resources would you have needed back then to remain calm and confident?" Tom thinks for a moment. "Focus. Calmness. Energy." He is asked to remember a moment when he felt exactly these qualities. His face lights up: "Playing table tennis with my best friend – I was completely at one with myself, light-footed, fast, confident."

He delves deeper into this state – the coach supports him with questions about posture, breathing, and inner dialogue. When the moment is particularly intense, the resource is anchored in the right palm.

To be sure, another separator follows: "What was your best vacation experience?" Tom immediately starts talking about Portugal. The test shows that the positive anchor is also in place. As soon as the coach presses his right palm, Tom feels the clear, energetic feeling of returning to the table tennis game.

Merging Anchors – with Hypnotalk

Now comes the crucial step: The coach presses Tom's positive anchor and says to him: "As you feel this pleasant sensation throughout your body, you can intensify it even more... And now..." Then the negative anchor is also triggered – so that both anchors are active at the same time.

The coach says: "... you begin to see and hear what there was to see and hear in the negative situation, while you remain in the pleasant feeling! And with all the new and changed sensations and feelings, you may evaluate the situation quite differently... or discover aspects that you had not recognized before... And to the extent that the meaning of this situation has changed for you..."

The coach now slowly releases the negative anchor and ends the hypnotherapy session: "... you can begin to try out new behaviors that correspond to your ideas – isn't that right?"

Tom takes a deep breath. The tension has subsided.

Integration & Future Pace

After another separator, Tom is asked to imagine the original situation in the meeting again. He describes it calmly, almost serenely. "I see my colleagues, I speak... and it feels doable. It's as if I have access to my abilities again."

In Future Pace, he imagines a future presentation – with the new feeling. "I walk in confidently. And even if I stumble once in a while, I remain calm inside."

What Is This Format Suitable For?

The anchor merging format is ideal for a variety of internal issues—especially when it comes to automatic, recurring reactions that are difficult to control. The method works on a neurological level because it directly addresses the emotionally linked states that are repeatedly triggered in certain situations.

Typical areas of application include emotional reactions such as exam anxiety, stage fright, anger, jealousy, or nervousness, which seem to arise "on their own" as soon as certain triggers are present. By deliberately merging these stressful reactions with powerful resources, the body and mind learn to react differently—calmly, confidently, and serenely.

The format is also ideal for transforming negative memories associated with emotional pain, failure, or guilt. People often carry such experiences with them for a long time—consciously or unconsciously. By simultaneously activating positive feelings, the past can be reevaluated and integrated.

Those who want to consciously control their feelings will find anchor merging to be an effective tool for strengthening self-regulation. Instead of suppressing or repressing emotions, they are worked with—mindfully, constructively, and solution-oriented. This not only strengthens emotional balance, but also confidence in one's own ability to act.
