Sculpture Work

Virginia Satir used sculpture work very frequently in her therapies and seminars. Through this and her extensive travel, sculpture work gained widespread recognition and popularity.

Exercise for Individual Sculpture

Pair up for this exercise.

  1. A imagines a specific situation that was emotionally charged (e.g., an argument with a boyfriend/girlfriend). A recalls the situation associatively and imagines all the other people involved. A pays attention to all sensory modalities.
  2. A now uses B for the sculpture. This means A "shapes" B until the sculpture image reflects their inner state. This process should take place as silently as possible.
  3. Examples of features of the sculpture that you can shape: stance on the ground, torso tilt, arm position, gaze direction, head position, facial expression....
  4. B stays in the sculpture until they can clearly identify their feelings, body sensations, and thoughts, and stores this information.
  5. A adopts exactly the same posture as the sculpture. A remains in the sculpture until they perceive their feelings, body sensations, and thoughts.
  6. Afterward, you dissolve both sculptures. First, B shares their feelings, body sensations, and thoughts. A listens and then reports which of these feelings, body sensations, and thoughts they can identify with or relate to.
  7. Now, A shares their feelings, body sensations, and thoughts with B.
